how to grow an indoor herb garden

plan it

First things first, let’s plan out our indoor herb garden!

You don’t have to get too deep here — a loose plan will do just fine. However, it’s important to have an idea of what herbs to pick up from the nursery. Otherwise, there’s a chance you’ll pick up everything that catches your eye… which can lead to a “too many plants, not enough space” type situation. I’m telling you this because I learned it the hard way. Don’t be like me.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you have pets? Is there a chance they’ll nibble on a leaf or two?

I have three animals in my house, and they seem to find immense joy in me by getting into mischief around the house (kidding.. sort of 🙈). I decided to play it safe and opt for pet-friendly herbs.

  • How much room do you have?
  • How many pots do you have?

Be sure to count your pots before you go. I overestimated the amount of pots I had the first time I planted an indoor herb garden, and I was stuck with returning a few plants that I just didn’t have enough room for. Again, don’t make the same mistake I did.

window, sunlight or grow lights, conditions. There’s so much to consider, so going into it with some sort of a plan is a good idea. However, this can be a very loose plan. It’s okay to let your creativity and imagination run wild (a bit) once you get to the nursery. There were a couple last minute decisions where I thought, “I have no idea if this is going to do well, but I’m going to give it a try and see if it works out.” Just prepare yourself to potentially “fail,” although you may already know that I don’t believe in failure.

now for the second best part – getting your hands dirty! gardening is so relaxing to me. It’s a meditative process and something I’ve grown to love. Not only that, but I feel so connected to my grandma, who passed away last year, as gardening was her favorite.

Which soil to use?

potting soil. don’t use soil from outside

Fertilizer

How often to water?

generally about once a week is good, but it really depends on the conditions (soil, sunlight, etc.)

reap the benefits

Harvest!!!

Don’t forget to celebrate. Gardening isn’t an easy task

Save money! Herbs are expensive
